COMMUNITY OUTREACH
With building alliances and supporting others in their endeavors being apart of our core, we feel that it’s important to highlight the philanthropic efforts of others and encourage them on their journeys. Mayweather Promotions’ fighters pride themselves in giving back to their communities and native countries by staying involved in fundraising efforts, assisting families who are in need, and overall staying involved in their community by volunteering their time and providing necessary resources to those in need. Read below to see how these fighters give back to communities.
Gervonta “Tank” Davis hosts a backpack giveaway for the children of his hometown, Baltimore, Maryland
Gervonta “Tank” Davis recently defended his WBA super featherweight title in his homecoming bout before a sellout crowd at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore. Davis returned one month later to give back to his community that has shown him continuous love and support. On Friday, August 23rd at the Robert C. Marshall Recreation Center gave out 300 school backpacks with assorted school supplies alongside his trainer Calvin Ford. Also in attendance at the back-2-school event was Baltimore native and NBA All-Star, Carmelo Anthony. The giveaway event also featured games, food, refreshments, and live performances.
“I know the community loves me. They showed that love last month when I fought. This is something that I have to go out of my way for, and it’s important for me to show my love back to them.”

Former two-time world champion, Badou Jack, continues his community involvement on a global level
Swedish born boxer and Las Vegas resident established the Badou Jack Foundation in 2018 with the mission of helping young lives torn by war that began in his father’s west African homeland, Gambia, and has now extended into Jordan. The work began before his bout in May of 2018 and has now taken him across the Middle East. The first task was to supply the people with nutrition shakes, feed the youth and then the expansion will begin. Jack has the plan to “expand all over the world no matter what religion, and no matter what culture. South American, Africa, Asia, Middle East- anywhere,” said Jack. Through his foundation he has done commendable philanthropic work that he looks to continue into 2020 and has made it his mission to help give as many children as possible around the world “a fighting chance.” Through the several initiatives in Gambia and Jordanian Refugee camps, they’ve taken on the mission of nourishment, education, and the quality of life. Their projects range from providing daily and proper nutrition to schooling, housing, physical activities, and rehabilitation.

Aside from the project of feeding in the children through the sale of Ripper Nutrition bars, the Badou Jack Foundation has recently opened an education center at Jordan’s largest refugee camp, Baqa’a. This center will focus on children who have not had access to education due to financial or physical restraints. They will be taught the basics such as math, language, and science.
The foundation is also currently working on a rehabilitation center for disabled refugees that will provide them with medical equipment and supplies, as well as a mentorship program that educates orphaned refugees by involving them in sports and going on field trips.
Sharif “The Lion” Bogere returns home to Uganda to give back to his community
Bogere was born and raised in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala. He grew up with the crucial need to fight in order to survive within his poverty-stricken country. At the age of 8, he began getting into fights with the kids in his neighborhood, keeping it a secret from his mother. At the age of 10, Bogere began amateur boxing and training at the Kampala Boxing Club. Fast forward to 2007, Bogere moved to the United States to continue his passion in the sport and since then his journey continues.
In March of 2019, Bogere made his long-awaited trip back to his native country of Uganda since moving to the states in 2007. He visited the students of his former school, Kololo High, where he spoke about the trajectory of his career and how he got to where he is today. Bogere advised the students to “be humble, patient and focused. You are here for a short while.”

For the duration of Bogere’s trip to Kampala, he visited his former boxing gym, Kampala Boxing Club and shared some words of wisdom to the local fighters.

FIGHT FOR YOUR EDUCATION
Education continues to be a top priority for The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation. Our goal is to promote literacy and school readiness through community events, contribute to encouraging women to reach unchartered heights through the scholarships we award, and motivate the youngest achievers to always be the best. We hope that even a simple gesture from TFMJF will motivate, encourage learning, and increase each student’s chances of success.
TFMJF remains dedicated to the fight for education by working to implement programs like the annual Back-2-School Supply Giveaway, Advancement of Women in Sports & Entertainment Scholarship, and Honor Roll Spotlight as our way of giving back to the community and helping future generations excel. Read on to learn about our newest scholarship recipients and get to know the students we selected for the Honor Roll spotlight.
Fall 2019 Scholarship Recipients
Five young women have been awarded the Advancement of Women in Sports & Entertainment Scholarship for the Fall 2019 semester, satisfying our goal of 8 scholarships being awarded annually. Please help us in congratulating our recent honorees: Carlynn Greene, Annika Wall, Tatiyana S. Lewis, Rebekah D. Youmans, and Sangjun M. Hornewer. To apply for the Spring 2020 scholarship before the November 17, 2019 deadline, go to: www.tfmjf.org/scholarships.
Name: Carlynn Greene
College: University of North Texas
Year in College: Junior
Major/Minor: Broadcast Journalism/Anthropology
Passion Statement: “All are called, but few choose to listen.”
Similar to her passion statement, Carlynn Greene believes she’s been called to the field of journalism and she’s listening. Carlynn is in the midst of her junior year at the University of North Texas just under an hour away from her hometown of Dallas. Now midway through her undergraduate degree, Carlynn can reflect on the progress she’s made since her senior year of high school when she had no interest in attending college. At the time, Carlynn identified with successful men and women who chose another course that didn’t involve collegiate experience.
We’re glad that Carlynn had a change of heart and chose the road of education, deflecting her superficial ideologies of what she then believed was ‘success’. Carlynn’s passion for writing helped in the discovery of her definition of success, which now includes a degree in journalism. With said degree, Carlynn plans to focus on the stories and news affecting today’s society like our current social and political climate. Her interest is in producing the news, which she believes is the heart of journalism.
Life at the University of North Texas has been a learning curve for Carlynn; she’s learning to adjust to the amount of freedom that college affords, discovering her interests, while also embracing on-campus diversity and inclusivity. Throughout her tenure at UNT Carlynn has excelled by repeatedly making the President’s List, maintaining an active membership with the National Association of Black Journalists, and being selected as an intern for The Excellence in Journalism, a news conference that predominately chooses higher level undergraduate students.
If you’re interested in pursuing a career in journalism, Carlynn advices that you be intentional, open minded, and prioritize the interests of your audience. In following her own advice, Carlynn has goals to create and produce her own investigative journalism style show or talk show. Until then, Carlynn will work to accomplish short term goals such as networking with students at her University and working toward a summer internship.
Name: Annika Wall
College: Wartburg College
Year in College: Junior
Major: Journalism and Communication
Passion Statement: “Be someone your past, future, and present selves are proud of.”
Meet Annika Wall, a born and raised Iowan who’s currently studying Journalism and Communication at Wartburg College, where her family roots run deep. “Being a Knight is in my blood,” said Annika Wall, now a Junior who’s following in the footsteps of her parents who also attended Wartburg College.
As a freshman, Annika joined the track and field team. However, early on Annika realized that her interest in sports also includes what goes on off the track. A love for sports and a passion for statistics led her to sports information, a segment of sports journalism. While most aren’t familiar with the details of a career in sports information, Annika admitted she had never heard of it until a college visit during her senior year of high school. However, confident in her love for writing, sports, and numbers, she knew the road of journalism would allow her to make a difference in the world.
Annika planned to spend her four years at Wartburg College exploring who she is and all the opportunities the world has to offer. There is no stone at college that Annika plans on leaving unturned; her involvement in on-campus organizations and activities are a priority. By the end of freshman year, Annika oversaw sports coverage for both the TV and newspaper and now assists at the radio station which has led to two work-study positions that directly relate to her field of study.
Annika’s currently involved in production of the Wartburg Trumpet (campus newspaper), 89.9 KWAR (campus radio station), Cedar Valley Today, Knight Vision Sports, and is a member of Phi Eta Sigma. Notable awards for Annika the Iowa Broadcast News Association, Iowa College Media Associate, and Associated Collegiate Press for her work in Radio, TV, and Print.
For now, Annika Wall will continue to gain experience in sports journalism and sports information through on and off campus experiences but hasn’t lost sight of her long-term goal: helping other young women break down barriers in the sports journalism industry. Annika was lucky enough to have determined women in athletic fields to look up to and she wants to pay it forward for those that follow.
Name: Tatiyana S. Lewis
College: Howard University
Year in College: Junior
Major/Minor: Legal Communications/Administration of Justice
Passion Statement: “I am passionate about being a servant leader. If service to your community is beneath you, then true leadership is beyond you.”
At an early age Tatiyana Lewis recognized the lack of African American representation in the legal field, which motivated her to pursue an education in Legal Communications. As a child, Tatiyana’s mother and sister encouraged her read, ask questions, participate in academic and extracurricular activities, and most importantly believe in herself. The self-confidence Tatiyana exudes has been brewing since her early childhood; even her environment couldn’t keep her still. Determined not to use her upbringing in August, Georgia as a crutch, Tatiyana reached beyond her comfort zone to greater heights: Howard University.
In her quest to provide minorities with fair and ethical legal representation, Tatiyana chose Howard, a historically black university to become culturally aware, more accepting of herself, and be inspirited by like-minded individuals. No longer the person who arrived on campus two summers ago, Tatiyana considers Howard a “place where dreamers and persistence collide,” which has fueled her desire to learn and grow the person she is becoming.
While enjoying the college experience, Tatiyana has been actively involved in organizations, programs, and volunteer activities that will position her for a great future. Tatiyana was a member of the Resident Life Royal Court, which plans and executes several programs that focus on the importance of fine arts, physical and mental health, and sexual assault awareness in the community. Tatiyana also participated in the Pre-Law Scholars Program at Duke University in 2018, the Lex Fellowship for Pre-Law Program in Madrid, Spain this year, and routinely volunteers her time serving the homeless at So Others Might Eat (SOME). When she has down time, Tatiyana has her sights on preparing for the LSAT so she can get accepted in one of the top 14 law schools in the country.
After law school Tatiyana would love to start a non-profit in her hometown helping underprivileged youth pursue their talents in fine arts, exposing them to unknown career paths. Tatiyana’s long term goal would be to pursue a career in Entertainment Law. For anyone wishing to follow the same career path as Tatiyana, she recommends that you do your research to find the best opportunities available.
Name: Rebekah D. Youmans
College: Gonzaga University
Year in College: 2nd Year Graduate Student
Major/Minor: Master of Arts in Sports and Athletic Administration
Passion Statement: “Your dreams are not too big. In reality, they are most likely far too small.”
Rebekah D. Youmans has spent the last decade focusing on her college education in preparation for a successful post-graduate career. Rebekah completed Bible college and an undergraduate degree in English and Communications with minors and History and Political Science. If given the opportunity, Rebekah admits she would have loved to experience additional minor degrees but settled on just the two. Rebekah is now in her second and final year of graduate school at Gonzaga University completing a Master of Arts in Sport and Athletic Administration.
Rebekah wants to ‘do it for the culture’. Rebekah knows the importance of helping athletes adjust to life in the U.S. For her undergraduate senior project, Rebekah studied the assimilation process for Latin American baseball players as they come to America. But the work doesn’t end there; Rebekah also wants to honor the culture the baseball players come from. A Kansas state native, it’s only natural for Rebekah to aspire towards a career in baseball with the hopes of working full time for the Kansas City Royals. With the Royals (or another team opportunity that comes her way), Rebekah would like to work in a variety of areas to include PR and community relations, team cohesion, and strength and conditioning. Rebekah wants to teach sports professionals and athletes how to honor one another and their differences so they can work toward collective goals and believes that her own experience playing baseball and inspiration from trailblazers like Oakland Raiders’ coach Kelsey Martinez and MLB analyst Jessica Mendoza will be the push she needs while pursuing her dreams in a male dominated industry.
Throughout her academic pursuits Rebekah’s family, specifically her late mother, has been her greatest source of strength and inspiration. Not only was her mother supportive, but she adopted the dreams of her daughter Rebekah, and always celebrated her accomplishments. With the finish line well within reach, Rebekah works harder than ever to achieve her goals, dedicating her life to making her mother proud.
Name: Sangjun M. Hornewer
College: Lake Forest College
Year in College: Senior
Major/Minor: Communication/ Journalism and Spanish
Passion Statement: “Don’t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big.”
Sangjun M. Hornewer is a senior majoring in Communication with a double minor in Journalism and Spanish that attends Lake Forest College in Illinois. Lake Forest is a liberal arts college known for its small class sizes, which Sangjun chose with intention, knowing it would allow meaningful relationships with her peers and professors to flourish and have a positive impact on her college experience. Another positive about Lake Forest is its proximity to the city of Chicago, making it easily accessible for networking opportunities and internships.
Sangjun attended a Montessori school for elementary education, which sparked her passion for learning early on. She was known for absorbing knowledge everywhere she went, including various sporting events that she often attended. It was Sangjun’s presence at soccer games and boxing matches that exposed her to the various TV, radio, and digital media outlets covering sports. At the events, Sangjun would interact with the media, using it as an opportunity to get to learn the impact that journalists and reports have on the world of sports. It was experiences that inspired Sangjun to pursue an education focused on journalism and communication.
With sports being a universal language; a career in journalism will keep Sangjun involved in athletics for a lifetime.
When Sangjun spends time away from her studies, she is actively involved on the varsity soccer team, serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper (The Stentor), and tutors at the writing center on campus. Sangjun’s also a Gummere Fellow, a member of Senior 25, a Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honors Society member, and Presidential Scholarship recipient. Completing her senior studies research project and graduating in December are Sangjun’s short term goals, but the long-term plan includes applying to and attending graduate school for journalism. Sangjun’s words of advice for all wishing to pursue a career in communication and/or journalism is to always be open to new experiences because you never know what opportunity or career path in the field may spark your interest!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

We’ve compiled some great information to get you started on your journey along with tips on how incorporating into your daily regime.
Tips to get kids to exercise
It’s just as important for kids to be healthy and stay physically active as it is for adults. Unfit kids can be at risk of diseases such as cardiovascular or chronic, as well as psychological disorders. In this generation, kids are spending more time watching television or YouTube, playing video games, and being on their phones, rather than spending time to get their daily physical activity like running, jumping, and skipping.
Here are ideas to get your children to be more active:
Be a role model– If your children see you being physically active, they will want to mimic your actions and are more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives.
Use exercise as transportation– Instead of driving the kids to school, try walking, biking, or even roller-skating.
Involve the whole family– Have everyone in your family participate in activities. Volunteer to coach your child’s sports team and encourage your own kids to play, join an outdoor activity, swimming, and many other activities.
Focus on fun- Turn a family dance party into a workout, take a trip to the zoo, park, or any other outdoor activities that can be done as a family.
Give gifts that promote physical activity- Gift your child with items that promote physical activity such as bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, soccer balls, basketballs, and even active-play video games.
Limit TV and computer time– Limit your child’s time using technology and offer them active options like joining an after-school program or enjoying sports. Even while watching TV as a family, get everyone to do jumping jacks during a commercial to continue the physical activity.

Everyone loves a challenging workout and now you can create your own at-home bootcamp. Strength and cardio exercises can be done in your home, or even outside.
Circuit: jumping jacks, lunges, high knees, push-ups, triceps dips (off a bench or curb), and sit-ups. Do each of these exercises for 60 to 90 seconds; rest in between exercises if needed. Repeat the circuit two or three times.
Going for a walk
Walking is the easiest way to get your daily workout in and all you really need are a pair of comfy shoes. Go on a walk around your neighborhood, at the park, or tour your city.
Take a hike
Going a hike is a great way to get your heart pumping. You can go by yourself or grab a group of friends and enjoy a day in the mountains together. The adrenaline you get on a hike does not compare to an afternoon at the gym!
Try a track workout
Running is a great way to work out and is the most effective cardio activity that helps you burn the more calories. Yes, you can run on a treadmill at the gym or around the neighborhood but running on a track keeps your running workouts exciting.
Turn your chores into a workout
If being too busy at home with house duties and chores is what’s keeping you from working out, that’s not an excuse anymore! You can get your cleaning activities done and burn calories while doing so. Focus on doing chores that will burn the most calories such as cleaning your bathroom, vacuuming, and many others. Add a challenge in between your cleaning activities to make your workout more interesting.

Studies have shown that there are many benefits to charitable giving, one of them being that it makes you happier. Below are some ways you can start volunteering and pay your good fortune forward.
Donate
Donating to others can make an immediate impact on the lives of the members in your community. From clothing donations to food, to in-kind gifts, all donations are equally benefitting and appreciated by those in need.
Philanthropy
Philanthropy is another option of giving back to your community or local organization. You may prefer to give back in the form of a cash donation. Choosing a local organization who is in need and giving a portion of proceeds is great for the community.
Fundraising
Fundraising involves getting your community together to support an individual cause. Members of the community and local organizations can get together to plan a fundraising event that raises awareness for a local need, or change, that encourages unity of the community and brings in money to support a great cause for change.
Drives
Holding a drive can involve the opportunity of collecting in-kind donations whether it is clothes, shoes, sanitary items, winter accessories, furniture, appliances, and much more.
Volunteer
Volunteer may be the easiest and most effective way of giving back to your community. Volunteer at your local school, local nonprofit organization, church. There are many organizations that are in need of your time.

MORE THAN AN ATHLETE
It’s safe to say Russell Wilson sees the bigger picture when it comes to being in a position to help others. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback spends much of his free-time going the extra mile to put smiles on kids’ faces, and his own face.
In 2014, The Why Not You Foundation was launched and is dedicated to creating real and lasting change in the world. Alongside his wife, Ciara, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter they support various children’s causes as she brings her passion for helping girls and young women and the fundamental belief that everyone should have the opportunity to grow in a healthy and positive way. In addition to financially supporting organizations aligned with their foundation’s mission, Russell works to extend the foundation’s impact by making frequent visits to Seattle Children’s, advocating for pediatric cancer through Strong Against Cancer, and partnering with Treehouse, YouthCare, IslandWood, Friends of the Children, and many others. He’s a national ambassador for the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association and his “Invested with Russell” raises money for local charities.
Most recently, The Why Not You Foundation announced a new teen empowerment campaign called Dream Big: Anything is Possible. The campaign encourages students to utilize programs and resources through community libraries and immerse themselves in STEAM education, homework help, mentoring, coding classes, ESL support SAT prep and more. As if that doesn’t set the philanthropic bar high, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson announced a $100,000 Why Not You scholarship, with a search and plans to announce eight Why Not You Scholars during the coming NFL season.
Russell also does his part in the athletics department with the Russell Wilson Quarterback Academy in various cities. The Academy is dedicated to providing the highest level of instruction for quarterbacks of all ages, NFL, College, and High School. They provide cutting edge training in every aspect and offer a wealth of knowledge from experiences in the NFL and Collegiate football.
Between juggling family and being a top quarterback in the NFL, Wilson has a lot on his plate but he’s made room to assist in the lives of others and for that we commend his great efforts!
THE FUTURE OF PHILANTHROPY
This decade sees philanthropy at a pivotal point. There is a greater awareness of how philanthropy can create or promote change that has led to an exciting new way of viewing the world we live in.
In an influencer-run social world, it has provided a new approach to giving and the implementation of social responsibility initiatives across the world. Building on views that were previously overlooked by society, it has now become the new normal to help others in need. For example, how many athletes or celebrities do you know that have an active foundation? Many. And that point-of-view alone offers great insight to the future of philanthropy which can ultimately help determine the future of our world.
When exploring the world of philanthropy you’ll find many different initiative, programs, events, efforts, etc. But the key is change; the drive to change the ways of giving and impact society no matter how big or small the effort. Societal attitudes and behaviors have adjusted to depend on connections and that helps organizations make more informed decisions about the future and get across a progressive message.
No matter how you look at it, philanthropy has a greatly positive benefit on society and the world. Our desire to maximize positive impact means that, as the world continues to evolve, so too must the practice of philanthropy. As communities are able to come together, future generations will also learn how they can shape the evolution of the world. The last decade has seen a blossoming of new ways to give and looking ahead, as the world becomes increasingly cautious, we expect greater contributions to the fight.
HOW TO GIVE BACK
“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” ― Steve Maraboli
Giving back is not a one way road and we want to help you kick start your philanthropic efforts. While cash is always accepted, time and effort is just as important, if not more so. Plus, giving of your time, energy, and effort provides you with immediate feedback as to what your contribution means to those receiving it. Read below as we dive into a few different ways you can assist without causing hardship for yourself.
- With the hectic on-the-go lifestyle we’ve developed, the needs of family members are often overlooked. Many adult children presume their parents will speak up if they need anything but this is not always the case, especially when they’ve been independent for years. You can: drop by for coffee, assist with yard or house work, invite them to your child’s school activities or schedule regular visits just to brighten their day.
- Educators are overworked and in need of help and schools work best when the community is actively involved. You can: read stories to elementary school students, monitor outdoor activities, chaperone field trips, or spend a weekend cleaning the school grounds. Your efforts will be recognized and appreciated!
- Playing sports teaches kids teamwork, responsibility, and the joy of being physically fit. Unfortunately, many kids don’t have the opportunity to participate in sports because there aren’t enough coaches or assistants. You can: fill those openings which are in almost every sport in every community. While some experience is helpful, it’s not always essential for you to be a good youth league coach.
- Students include people of all ages, not just children. Teaching literacy to adults can change their lives. Helping someone learn English can expand his or her horizons, able to further interact in the broad community. Academic subjects are not the only ones that need tutors. You can: teach others about computers and the Internet or even life skills such as: cooking, sewing, and home repairs.
- Hospital volunteers provide crucial support to hospitals, and also offer comfort and convenience to patients, families, and visitors. You can: sit with patients, work with children, help with food service or simply push wheelchairs. Hospitals have a wide variety of volunteer needs that are suitable for all ages.
- Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve food through local charities throughout the year. Meals on Wheels, has 2.6 million volunteers that help serve 2.5 million seniors every day. You can: volunteer to offer nutritious meals, warm smiles, and a safety check.
