TFMJF looks to award eight eligible applicants the Advancement of Women in Sports & Entertainment Scholarship annually. Help us in congratulating our recent honorees: Kaylie Defilippis, Haille Rose Saal-Khalili, and Kaitlyn Peterson. Read more about the career paths they have chosen and their goals below. To apply for the Fall 2019 scholarship before the June 14, 2019 deadline, go to: www.tfmjf.org/scholarships.
Name: Kaylie Defilippis
College: California State University, Northridge
Year in College: Senior
Passion Statement: “Your hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life.”
California born and raised Cinema and TV arts major Kaylie Defilippis exudes determination. This key character trait was learned at any early age and will prove essential in her quest to work in the sports & entertainment industry. Kaylie may have been born to a bloodline of actors, but her journey hasn’t always been easy. She works multiple jobs to pay her way through school and knows that the ultimate prize is invaluable.
Kaylie has a passion for the arts and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. There were no other options; college was the only answer. After 15 years of private education, Kaylie chose to attend California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She knew that attending CSUN was smart because of their accomplished Cinema and TV department and the proximity to her home. Many of her professors work or have worked in the industry, so their experience and guidance are very valuable for someone that wants to enter that field. Kaylie also knew that attending CSUN would help her to secure a job in her desired field after graduation, which is one of her long-term goals.
Even with two jobs and a full course load, Kaylie still manages to participate in on-campus activities like UNICEF. She’s on the Dean’s list every semester and volunteers as a director, producer, and editor for nearby businesses and schools looking for promotional materials. For now, Kaylie looks forward to completing her television production internship and graduating in the Fall. When asked what advice she would give to someone wanting to follow her path, Kaylie simply said follow your heart because she believes it will make your entire experience more rewarding when you do what you love. “Just be patient and work hard. Good things do come to those who wait.”
Name: Haille Rose Saal-Khalili
College: University of Arizona
Year in College: Senior
Passion Statement: Leave better than you came.
San Francisco native Haille is in her final year of college at the University of Arizona. At 10 years of age, Haille decided that she wanted to be a sports broadcaster, and has continued on the path to reach this goal ever since. Why sports broadcasting, you ask? Blame it on Haille’s upbringing in the Bay Area, an area of die-hard sports fans, and Haille was no exception. Both Haille and her mom are passionate about sports, especially baseball. When combining Haille’s love for sports and writing, she decided on a career path of journalism.
From that point Haille began to prepare for a career in journalism; she filled her high school schedule with broadcasting and journalism classes, and instantly fell in love. Haille knew that college would be beneficial in expanding her thought process, helping her on the road to self-discovery, helping her achieve her dreams. From what we can tell, she was right. Haille began her college journey as a Broadcast Journalism Major, with a minor in Communications. She chose the University of Arizona because of its proximity to home, the journalism programs offered, and her amazement by the school’s beautiful campus.
Haille has excelled at the University of Arizona from the beginning, has set forth short- and long-term goals, and has happily worked toward reaching them daily for the past few years. She’s so close to reaching many of her short-term goals which include: graduating from college, maintaining a 4.0GPA throughout her tenure at the University of Arizona, excelling at her internship this Spring, and landing an awesome position with a local sports team. This Spring, Haille will intern at KVOA Tucson and hopes to land a job in broadcasting and/or social media marketing for a sports team in Phoenix or San Francisco. Her long-term goal is to work for the San Francisco Giants, the baseball team that motivated her to choose a career in sports broadcasting. Haille hopes that this goal can be achieved by working for NBC Sports Bay Area or working directly for the team.
Haille has worked hard on her educational journey, which has led to academic and social achievements like entry into Kappa Tau Alpha, a journalism honors society, and multiple scholarships and apprenticeship opportunities like the Arizona Daily Star program. She’s committed to her dream and wants to you know that you should “never believe people when they say you won’t succeed.” Haille knows the key to success: hard work and dedication.
Name: Kaitlyn Peterson
College: UCLA
Year in College: Junior
Passion Statement: Pursue and follow your joy, wherever that leads you.
Kaitlyn has been in love with music her entire life. She’s played many instruments like the piano, ukulele, and guitar, participated in musicals and recitals, and has had a ‘music corner’ set up in her bedroom for as long as she could remember. One of the most important influences in her quest to explore music are her parents. They’ve been her greatest supporters who have fostered her passion for music and have encouraged her to pursue her dreams. With their support, Kaitlyn’s interest in various writing genres also blossomed. By high school, she desired to learn more and understand great readings such as Paradise Lost, Great Expectations, and Wuthering Heights. Exposure to such complex texts inspired her to pursue a communications degree in college. Kaitlyn is now a Junior at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where she is studying English & Communication.
UCLA felt like home to Kaitlyn. Yes, it’s a prestigious university that is ranked as the nation’s #1 public university, but Kaitlyn fell in love with the community and endless opportunities. Not only does UCLA foster personal connection and growth, but Kaitlyn felt that there was a lot to learn from her peers and knew their English programs would inspire her to further her studies and pursue a greater understanding of the world. According to Kaitlyn, the large campus doesn’t get in the way of students sharing and building a tight-knit bond with one another.
Kaitlyn has been very active in campus activities. She’s a member of the Bruin Belles Service Association, Alpha Delta Pi, she tutors for UCLA’s Undergraduate Writing Center, and serves as part of UCLA’s Reformed University Fellowship. As a member of these various organizations, she helps to assist with meaningful philanthropic events for youth in the Los Angeles community, fellowships with the elderly, plays sports with children from the local Boys & Girls Club, works to positively impact her Greek sisterhood, help other students formulate strong English skills for essays and personal statements, and spread the word of God to those around her.
Kaitlyn hopes to continue impacting the world with her writing, music, and philanthropic efforts. One of her short-term goals is to perform an original song in public. Having wanted to share her own music for years, Kaitlyn believes an opportunity like this will push her out of her comfort zone. Kaitlyn also hopes to learn as much about the music and entertainment industry as possible, knowledge she believes will ease engagement with other music executives and professionals when needed. Her long-term goal is to become an influential executive within the music or entertainment industry, combining her love for music and writing to create campaign ideas, promote up-and-coming artists, and musical events. It is through music that Kaitlyn believes people are united as a people.
TFMJF “Honor Roll Spotlight”
The goal of our “Honor Roll Spotlight” is to shed light on the achievements of our youth, build their confidence, and keep them motivated and eager to excel in their studies.. For this newsletter, we have chosen to acknowledge two students who are shining in school and beyond. The 2 students, both from eastern states, share an enthusiasm for learning that has been highlighted below.
Jisele Gonzalez is a 10-year-old honor roll student from New Jersey who’s on a mission to make the world a better place. Jisele has mastered her studies, while also participating in a soccer league, and fighting for a safe and bully-free environment at school. Did we forget to mention that she also supports our troops? Get to know Jisele Gonzalez a little better below.
Q: Is this your first time making Honor Roll, if not, how many times have you made Honor Roll?
A: No, this is not my first time making Honor Roll. Last year I made Honor Roll all four marking periods.
Q: What is your favorite subject and why?
A: My favorite subject is Social Studies. I enjoy learning about our history and how the world has changed over time. My second favorite subject is Language Arts.
Q: What is your favorite book/series?
A: Right now, my favorite book is Ugly by Robert Hoge. It’s one of my favorite books because it teaches a good lesson: be kind to others no matter what they look like.
Q: What helps you stay focused & motivated in school?
A: My cousin Janessa is my motivation. She’s a straight “A” student and I would like to be the same. It’s also easy to stay focused when you are learning new things, which is something that I enjoy.
Q: Who do you look up to as a role model, and why?
A: My role model is my Aunt Liz who has beat cancer twice and is in the Army. Aunt Liz runs marathons in honor of people that have died in war. She is also the reason we are safe. I look up to her every day.
Q: Are you involved in any after-school programs or sports, if so, what?
A: I play soccer during the Fall and I have also been a Girl Scout since I was in Kindergarten.
Q: How do you juggle school and your after-school commitments?
A: I juggle school and after-school activities by always making sure I complete any school work as soon as I get home. If I have practice but I haven’t completed my work, that sometimes means I have to stay up an extra hour to finish.
Q: Do you have any other achievements or accomplishments that you would like to share with everyone?
A: I received the Presidential Award for making Honor Roll all four marking periods, which was pretty awesome. Up until last year I was in “The Duffy Force”, a program at my school that helps make the school a better place for our peers and helps fight against bullying.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not in school or studying?
A: When I’m not in school I like to hang out with my friends and family. I also like to draw and play with my puppy.
Q: Tell us something about you that we haven’t already asked you would like us to share with everyone.
A: One thing that I would like to share is that I won the NJNG Conservation Contest and earned $1,000 for my school. Winning is special to me because I think that as kids we need to help make the world a better place to live for ourselves and the rest of the world.
Honor Roll student Kylen Engram is a 11-year-old 6th grader from Delaware who enjoys a multitude of activities outside of the classroom. Kylen loves the outdoors, traveling, the arts, and has a knack for adventure. Learn how Kylen tackles his workload, while also making time for his extracurricular activities.
Q: Is this your first time making Honor Roll, if not, how many times have you made Honor Roll?
A: No, I have made Honor Roll every quarter since 4th grade.
Q: What is your favorite subject and why?
A: My favorite subject is math because I’m very good at it. I don’t think math is hard, but I like that the material can sometimes be challenging.
Q: What is your favorite book/series?
A: My favorite book series is Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. I have a huge imagination and the Harry Potter books and movies allow me to explore my imagination on another level. It’s one thing to read a book, it’s another to envision the characters coming to life in your mind.
Q: What helps you stay focused & motivated in school?
A: I’ve learned the importance of staying focused and motivated in school; it’s what sets me apart from others who may not take their future seriously. For me, I make sure that I go to bed on time, so I am well rested in the morning. It’s also easier to focus when you’re learning about subjects of interested or you’re doing something in class that you’re good at.
Q: Who do you look up to as a role model, and why?
A: I look up to my parents. They are always guiding me in the right direction, giving me advice or answering my questions, and want to help me succeed. They take great care of my sister and me.
Q: Are you involved in any after-school programs or sports, if so, what?
A: I like to try out a variety of sports and activities. I’m not the biggest sports person, but I take boxing and hockey lessons. I also like to take coding classes at the library and often participate in activities for kids at my church.
Q: How do you juggle school and your after-school commitments?
A: My homework comes first. It’s only after my schoolwork is completed that I am allowed to participate in any after-school activities. Sometimes my mom will let me go to an activity like boxing if I promise her that completing my homework is my first priority when I get home.
Q: Do you have any other achievements or accomplishments that you would like to share with everyone?
A: I’ve received awards for attendance, Honor Roll, exceeding the average test scores, and acknowledgements of great behavior, but the biggest accomplishment has been working to overcome my learning struggles.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not in school or studying?
A: When I get free time I love to travel, play video games, draw cartoons and write stories, hang out with my friends outside, or play with my little sister.
Q: Tell us something about you that we haven’t already asked you would like us to share with everyone (ideas: could be a cool place traveled, an interest such as animals, etc).
A: When I grow up, I want to work in animation and game design. I’m hoping that the success of my first game will lead to good ideas for the next one.

Natural Face Cleansers
Ditch the face washes and face products and make your natural face cleansers in the comfort of your own home. These natural ingredients uniquely make for great, easy to use facial cleansers for any skin type.
Coconut Oil Face Cleanser – Coconut oil helps eliminate any shine that may appear on your face, without getting rid of your skin’s natural oils. The natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that it contains make it an effective moisturizer.
Here is how to use: Massage a small amount of coconut oil onto your face (size of a quarter) for about 30 seconds. Then you apply a warm towel onto your face to open up your pores. Wait about 15-30 seconds, then remove the oil by patting with a washcloth.
Apple Cider Vinegar Face Cleanser– This cleanser will help restore your skin’s pH levels, help soothe breakouts on your skin, prevent clogged pores, and keeps your skin from becoming too dry or too oily.
Here is how to use: Mix 1-part apple cider vinegar with 2-parts water and shake well. Apply it to your clean face with a cotton ball. Once your skin is dry, put on your daily moisturizer.
Honey and Lemon Face Cleanser– Honey and lemon combined make for a great natural moisturizer and antiseptic, the perfect soothing and cleaning combination to a natural cleanser. The ingredient of honey is naturally antibacterial and filled with antioxidants, which prevent acne and slow down your skin’s aging process. It is also great for a complexion boost. Lemon juice contains vitamin C, which works as a great antioxidant.
Here is how to use: Combine 2 teaspoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Warm it up between your fingers, then smooth a thin layer onto your face and neck. Leave it on until it’s dry, then rinse with warm water.
Yogurt Face Cleanser– This cleanser is rich in protein and lactic acid. With those two compounds working together, it helps detoxify the skin. By applying lactic acid regularly on your skin, it helps you get rid of the dead cells through exfoliating and the protein helps tighten up your pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines and hydrate your skin.
Here is how to use: Gently massage a thin layer of plain yogurt into your clean face by using your fingertips, this will help loosen any dirt or makeup that is on your skin. Leave the yogurt on for about 5-10 minutes, then wash it off with warm water and a towel.
Olive Oil Facial Cleanser– Olive oil is a great ingredient for naturally moisturizing dry skin. Its antioxidants and good fats may also help reduce free radicals, which in turn can help relieve irritated or sunburnt skin.
Here is how to use: Create yourself a natural, effective night cream with ½ cup of olive oil, ¼ cup of vinegar, and ¼ cup of water. This will work to lighten your dark spots, kill bacteria, and make your skin smooth and clear.

“If you want to lift up yourself, lift up someone else.” – Booker T. Washington
MORE THAN AN ATHLETE
Defensive powerhouse and Houston Texans NFL star, J.J. Watt is constantly in the forefront of raising awareness and providing support for those in need.
Around the time he was drafted, he started the JJ Watt Foundation with the goal of providing funding for after-school athletic programs. The foundation believes that sports provide powerful learning opportunities outside the classroom, helping kids learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work. School sports also provide safe and secure activities for kids during after-school hours. The foundation has funded new equipment, uniforms, transportation to games, and secure areas to store program equipment. In the years since its inception, the foundation has distributed nearly $4.3 million to after-school sports programs.
In times of pain and agony, just hours after the shooting that killed eight students and two teachers in Santa Fe, Texas, Watt committed to paying for the funerals of the victims. And that isn’t the first time he has reached out after such a tragedy –after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, Watt invited some of the children from Sandy Hook Elementary to meet him and participate in a day of football and much-needed fun at the Texans’ stadium.
His efforts see no bound and following Hurricane Harvey that devastated areas around Houston and the rest of the Gulf Coast in August 2017, the foundation took on another charitable project: Hurricane Harvey relief. In the wake of the massive flooding and damage in Houston, Watt reached out to his fans, hoping to raise $200,000 for relief efforts. In the end, Watt’s effort raised $41.6 million. Because of his fundraising, he was awarded the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, an honor given for the charity and volunteer efforts of NFL players.
Since Harvey, Watt’s foundation has partnered with other charitable organizations in Houston as they administer the funds, including Americares and Feeding America. They’ve helped tens of thousands of people with everything from repairing and rebuilding their homes, rebuilding childcare centers and after-school programs, providing physical and mental health care, and distributing medications.
RISE OF FEMALE PHILANTHROPISTS
Melinda Gates is known as the wife of Microsoft founder, Bill Gates but her demonstration of incredible philanthropy work throughout the world is what will fuel her legacy.
After its 1999 establishment, Melinda became the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation was setup to donate the bulk of their fortune to improving health care and reducing poverty around the world. They created the foundation, which has an endowment of more than $50 billion, after reading that hundreds of thousands of children in poor countries were dying of diarrhea.
Mrs. Gates believes it is important that every person have equal access to the internet and the research capabilities that improve learning. In fact, if you have ever enjoyed using a computer at a public library, it has been largely due to her efforts. She has ultimately expanded the vision of the foundation to include addressing the prevalence of global poverty and health concerns. And for two consecutive years she made the list of Forbes Top 100 Powerful Women in 2013 and 2014 and is now known as one of the most famous female philanthropists. Her honorable goals even caught the attention of Warren Buffet which sparked him to donate an astounding $30 billion dollars to the foundation.
Through the years the foundation’s has provided worldwide contributions to combating diseases like polio, malaria and many other diseases and economical inequalities. Last year, the Gates Foundation committed $20 million to strengthen women’s groups worldwide.
GIVING BACK AS A FAMILY
“Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time”
- Ancient Proverb
No matter the size of a family’s budget, the consistent involvement of younger generations can enhance family connections and communication through teaching kids to acknowledge the lifestyle they are privileged to enjoy and ultimately leaving a lasting family legacy.
In our times, many children have far more toys and games than they could ever play with and more books than they could ever read. On every birthday, holiday or other special occasion, the amount of “stuff” continues to accumulate. Children as young as toddlers can donate gently used toys and books to a local nonprofit. Likewise, for special occasions, your child can request donations to a local charity in lieu of gifts from their peers. Explain how the donations will be used to help people or promote a cause. When possible, have the child take the gifts (new or used) to the charity to participate in the transfer. Parents can set an example by making the same request for their own birthday and holiday presents.
Children who are old enough to more actively participate can also join with older family members in a volunteer project – such as packing meals at a food pantry, tutoring younger children or engaging in a cause-related walk, run or ride. Meaningful volunteer activities can also be included as part of family vacations, especially abroad. And as they grow older, they can become more meaningfully involved in family giving decisions.
GET INVOLVED
As we enter the new year, the goal of The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation is to reach far beyond the impact we had on the community in prior years. Our Back-2-School Giveaway, Fight-4-Fitness, Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, and volunteer opportunities throughout the Las Vegas community has allowed us to continue achieving our mission. We have also been fortunate enough to meet likeminded members of the community who enjoy providing services to others as much as we do. Together, we have accumulated over 706 service hours while empowering community alliances, impacting the youth, promoting health and wellness, and strengthening family foundations through community development, entrepreneurialism, and education resulting in a wholesome community.
The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation plans to continue bringing events to the community that serve and promote health and wellness while also fostering a relationship with future volunteers that support our initiatives and look forward to helping us reach our goals. Our efforts to provide for a better community doesn’t stop with our own events; we volunteer across the Las Vegas area, and keep everyone informed about events happening worldwide. FMJF is always looking for new ways to give back. We welcome anyone who wants to make a difference to join us in uplifting the community!
Help us soar to new heights in 2019! If you are interested in volunteering for one of our programs or events, please feel free to contact us via email at: contact@tfmjf.org.
